Character Traits

Teaching character traits always sounds easy enough, yet every year without fail I always have some students that struggle to understand.

How cute is this?

My favorite way to help students understand character traits is to have them examine their very own! We usually work together to make a giant list of positive and negative character traits. Keeping in mind that we’re not describing what we look like, but rather what type of personality traits we have.

When our lists are done, we start searching it to see which words could represent us. I encourage my students to pick at least 10 words and discuss with their table what they picked and why.

Once everyone has chosen their character traits, pass out this paper. Students will draw a picture of themselves inside the frame and then write their traits all around their selfie.

Hallway Display

Encourage your students to take their time and use colors. These make an absolutely perfect hallway display.

I especially love to do mine around Open House time. Parents always love seeing their child’s self portrait and the words they choose to describe themselves.

For best results, have your students trim their paper and glue it to construction paper. Then viola! Not only will your students have a better understanding of character traits, but you now have something adorable to brighten your classroom or hallway.

Have a fabulous school year!
